MTA R&D Centre

Within the scope of the Project, the main goal and purpose of the MTA R&D Centre is to recover rare earth elements from both ores and wastes. Although the main target is rare earth elements, metals such as lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, silver and gold will also be recovered in the process. In this context, the project will be carried out under 4 sub-titles:

  • Recovery from ores obtained from mining sites,
  • Recovery from electronic wastes,
  • Recovery from fluorescent lamps,
  • Certified reference material production,

For this purpose, in the facility to be established on a pilot scale within the campus of the MTA Directorate General; There will be E-Waste Preparation, Metal Separation, Hydrometallurgy, Pyrometallurgy, Reference Material Production units.

During the operations in the facility to be established, geochemical and mineralogical analysis devices will be provided for the sensitive analyses needed, and the capacity and competence of the existing laboratories will be increased.

Recovery from ores extracted from mining sites: Rare earth elements of high purity and of the quality required by the market will be obtained from the ore extracted from the fields discovered to contain rare earth elements by using various enrichment and purification processes.

Recovery from electronic waste: Rare earth elements and metals such as lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, silver and gold will be recovered from all kinds of electronic devices, circuit boards, touch screens, computers and other device screens using pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods. As a result of the electrical transformation in recent years, the need for batteries has escalated rapidly and the amount of battery waste has inevitably increased. In the recycling facility to be established, in addition to the recovery of rare earth elements from waste batteries, elements such as lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese will be recovered in a way that can be utilized by the market.

Recovery from fluorescent lamps: Rare earth elements found in fluorescent lamps that have completed their lifetime will be recovered using pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods.

Production of certified reference material: In order to obtain accurate results during the analysis of raw materials and wastes containing rare earth elements, it is necessary to use certified reference materials. The certified material is much needed both in Türkiye and in the world. In the facility to be established, world-class certified reference materials will be produced.
